Bishnupur Terracotta Documentation Expedition

Bishnupur Terracotta Documentation Expedition
An intensive 5-day photographic documentation expedition mapping endangered friezes across 12 laterite shrines in Bishnupur.
Between March 15 and March 20, 2026, the Bharatcharcha research team led by Goutam Dey conducted an extensive archival survey of the Malla Dynasty temple complexes in Bishnupur. Equipped with specialized macro lenses, medium-format digital backs, and archival color calibration targets, the team documented over 420 individual narrative plaques.

The expedition focused on documenting salt efflorescence and environmental decay on the west-facing walls of the Shyam Rai and Madan Mohan temples. All plates are being cataloged with geolocation metadata and will be deposited in the Foundation's permanent open-access cultural archive.
