INSTITUTIONAL VISION

Safeguarding Cultural Memory Through Education

Heritage is not only what we inherit. It is what we choose to remember, protect and pass on. India’s heritage lives not only in its monuments, museums and archaeological remains, but also in its villages, traditions, crafts, stories, festivals, landscapes and, above all, in the people who keep them alive. **Bharatcharcha Foundation (BcF)** is an initiative dedicated to bringing this heritage closer to people — especially students, young minds and communities at the grassroots. Rooted in more than four decades of engagement with heritage, photography, research and cultural documentation, BcF works to **conserve, document, protect and promote our shared socio-cultural heritage**, with a special focus on West Bengal and its remarkable cultural landscape. ### Why We Do It We believe that heritage survives when people connect with it. A monument becomes meaningful when its story is known. A tradition lives when the next generation understands its value. A photograph can preserve what time may otherwise erase. Our endeavour is therefore not simply to preserve the past, but to **create awareness, curiosity and a sense of responsibility towards the heritage around us.** ### What We Do Through a wide range of educational and cultural initiatives, BcF creates opportunities to **see, experience, learn, document and participate**. Our activities include: * Heritage walks and field visits * Exhibitions and heritage displays * Seminars, lectures and workshops * Photography and heritage documentation * Research and publication * Cultural and educational programmes * Quizzes, interactive activities and awareness campaigns * Student and youth engagement * Community-based heritage initiatives * Collaboration with schools, colleges, universities, museums, cultural organisations and local communities We are particularly interested in the **lesser-known stories of heritage** — forgotten places, archaeological remains, local histories, traditional practices, folk culture, crafts and the many expressions of heritage that exist beyond the familiar. "From Knowing to Caring" Our philosophy is simple: **Know your heritage. Experience it. Document it. Understand its value. Protect it. Pass it on. Bharatcharcha Foundation seeks to build a growing community of students, researchers, photographers, educators, heritage enthusiasts, cultural practitioners and concerned citizens who believe that heritage is not merely a memory of yesterday, but a responsibility towards tomorrow. Bharatcharcha Foundation Conserve • Preserve • Protect • Promote

Established under the presidency of historian and documentarian Goutam Dey, the Foundation actively organizes non-invasive field studies, student observational walks, village artisan workshops, and public symposiums across endangered heritage corridors in Eastern India.

By engaging school and university students directly with historic monuments, ancient terracotta shrines, and living crafts communities, we empower the next generation to become vigilant custodians of their own cultural inheritance.
